Agay-ay: The Hidden Gem of Southern Leyte
In Agay-ay, San Juan, time feels different. It’s a small town, but full of life in its own way. The sea is close, its waves always singing a soft song. The hills are green all year, like they protect the town from the busy world outside. People here are simple, but their hearts are big. When you meet someone, they will greet you with a smile, and maybe even invite you to sit and talk.
Every day, the sun rises over the water, and the air smells fresh, like the earth and the ocean are one. In the morning, you can hear the birds, the rustling of the leaves, and the quiet of the town waking up. The children play by the shore, while the older ones sit on the porch, watching the day go by. Life is peaceful here, slow and steady. It’s not the rush of the city—it’s a different kind of rhythm.
Agay-ay may not have the busy streets or the tall buildings, but it has something special: the feeling that time doesn’t matter, that it’s okay to slow down and enjoy what you have. Here, you’ll always find a place to rest, a kind person to talk to, and a view that will remind you how beautiful the simple things in life can be.
Here are some photos I took each time I go back home.
